Peter Yorn @ Webster Hall 7.28.09

Photobucket

Does SDSG love any singer songwriter more? Yeah maybe.. (nod to Ryan Adams) but Pete Yorn is surely right up there. Last night Pete performed @ Webster Hall & by the reception he got from the crowd, his fans were out in full force. Playing a mix of new stuff off his current album "Back and Forth" and old gems from "Music for the Morning After" (which happens to be an SDSG all time favorite) the show was solid from start to finish. Usually Pete rocks out solo, but this time around he had a full backing band complete with horns, a energetic tambourine guy and dueling guitarists. He plays again tonight - check em out if you can.

This guys needs to be fired ASAP. For all those that don't follow the Mets, their General Manager (and overall face of the franchise) Omar Minyaya publicly chastised / berated a Daily News reporter for breaking a story on the Mets Head of Player Development (Tony Bernazard) who had picked a fight with a Mets minor league player + other ugly transgressions. At the press conference on Monday to announce the Tony's firing, the Mets GM pulled a page out of a high schools bully's playbook & directed the attention on the reporter (who correctly reported the story) by informing the audience the guy had previously "lobbied" him & Mets COO Fred Wilpon for a player development position within the organization, thus inferring the reporter wrote / investigated the story with the intention to replace Tony Bernazard.

Yeah. Crazy.

As it tuns out, the reporter had merely inquired how one would go about getting into a professional baseball organization & was just seeking career advise. Never did he lobby to replace anyone. Could you imagine Brian Cashman acting in such a lowly manner? Or any other respectable GM? I don't think so..Minaya has proven himself to be liar & bully who not only shamed the Mets franchise - but himself. I don't care how many more wins the Mets add to their season (currently on a 4 game win streak- nice!) Minyaya should be fired today..Good riddance guy.

Weekend Recap

Always takes SDSG a day or two before we get our mind right to recap the weekend. So here it goes.

The Gathering of the Vibes Friday was Real Real nice. We've been attending this festival since 01' & it's always something to look forward to mid-summer. Things started in the afternoon with a southern styled JJ Grey & Mofro set - which seriously smoked. These cats always bring their A+ game (and we appreciate that) Next up was Parliament Funkadelic...they were alright, but it doesn't get more hardcore than hearing / seeing "We Want the Funk" played by P -Funk. As the sun went down, Deep Banana got the crowd a-moving w/ their signature blend of rock grooves. The first song they played was Aces (not sure what the name is) Closing out Friday nights show was Moe (who we absolutely love). They played their asses off (5 songs worth) before the inclimate weather sent us & the band scurrying for cover.

Although the thunder & lightning was a total bummer, SDSG got to play an acoustic set for some lucky fans @ our buddies apartment as a result. The setlist went something like Sample in a Jar > Friend of the Devil > The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down, Wonderwall > Bug > Silent in the Morning > Wanted Dead or Alive, Last Dance w/ Mary Jane, AC/DC Bag > Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town > Surprise Valley > Driving Song. Character Zero. If your looking to book SDSG - contact our Mgr. / Head of Security - TNash.

Woke up Saturday & was as ready to go. After a slow cruise around the Norwalk area picking up supplies, we met up with J-Ford for a boat ride to the 2nd Annual Cockenoe Island Beach Bash. Pulling up, you could see what looked like a 150 + people all in the throws of getting their par-tay on. Some people lounging on boats, others on rafts - all just thouroghly enjoying themselves.

The days highlight for me came in the form of an epic flip cup game vs. some competitive ladies (& few turncoat fellas). SDSG may have lost this one , but we'll live to play another day. As the sun went down, everyone tried to make their way back to the mainland, and by that I mean everyone jumped on the limited boats that were out there with the hope of getting in asap. Most did - some didn't (:cough: Jared + Galluppo :cough:) I ended up on the Stunnie1 (Woody's ride) and was all good until we ran outta gas as we approached the harbor. No worries. Fordo came back out and picked us up. Upon touching down on land, to say that the kids equilibrium was off would be an understatement.

Hot off the press (thanks Hiddentrack) - Jay Z will replace the Beastie Boys as Friday night's headliner @ the All Points West Festival. SDSG was only planning on going Saturday to catch the TOOL set , but with Jigga now holding things down along with the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Vampire Weekend - Friday seems like a go go.

Two For Tuesday: Singles Edition

Club Interviewer: Talking here with Cliff Poncier. Cliff, any comments on the "Seattle Sound" and Citizen Dick's place in it?

Cliff Poncier: Well, I don't like to reduce us to just being part of the "Seattle Sound." I'd like to think of us as expanding more. Like, we're HUGE in Belgium right now

Club Interviewer: Now, a song like "Touch Me, I'm Dick" is about... what?

Cliff Poncier: Well, I think "Touch Me, I'm Dick," in essence, speaks for itself, you know. I think that, you know, that's basically what the song is, um... about... is about, you know... I-I think a lot of people might think it's actually about, you know,"My name is Dick, and, you know, you can touch me," but, I think, you know, it can be seen either way.

Feelin this track from the new Discover LP. The band's a side project from the members of Vampire Weekend & Ra Ra Riot. The song's a nice mix of electronic & pop music - perfect for that $$ summer playlist you've been workin on.

A Note From J-Rod...

"Only in NYC can you be sitting on your couch watching tv, and have a cracked out woman jump through your window from the fire escape, with blood all over her face, black and blue eyes... screaming / freaking out... and then proceeding to run into your living room.. pick up your computer and toss it across the living room at you. This happened to me and my roomate last night. I thought i was going to die. OMG!!

Two For Tuesday : Your Vegas Edition

Photobucket

A little birdy recently told us about a band we had to check out called 'Your Vegas' (she happens to also be dating the lead guitarist). So last night SDSG headed over to the Studio @ Webster Hall where they were set to perform the 2nd gig of a (3) week Monday night residency. Combining soaring guitar licks , killer harmonies & an arena sized stage presence, this band put on one hell of rock show.

Hailing from Leeds England, they've already put out two albums & have opened up for both the Bravery & Duran Duran. With a new album set to be released within the next few months, all signs point to a fast trajectory towards the BigtYme.

"I've been around this block twice now. Looking for something. A clue. I've been looking for clues and something led me back here. Yeah. So here I am. It could have been me, the one who was at Ringo's place when the shit went down. Hey I know how it is. I've been there. We've all done bad things. We've all had those guilty feelings in our heart. I don't know. But I'm going to have to settle this... So you know me. You know my reputation. Thirteen inches is a tough load, I don't treat you gently. So I'm going to be nice. So I'm going to be nice...& I'm gonna ask you one more time. Where the fuck is Ringo?

July 4th 09' - So So Nice

The July 4th weekend has to be our hands down favorite of the year (or way way up). SDSG kicked things off Thursday evening by spending some quality time with the Moms, taking in a terrific seafood dinner & getting a little rest before for the insanity that awaited.

July 3rd was a flat out homerun. Kudos to the fellas @ 89 Kenilworth for their continued hospitality year after year. With the party's attendee slimmed down - this years edition definitely had a great mix of All-Stars contributing to the celebration. Personal highlight: DJ MastaNugz pumping MJ's Human Nature > Born in the USA for the FANS during the firework display. (they loved it!)

Woke up around noon on Americas B-Day & headed straight to our buddies boat in Westport. No less than an hour later we were cruising on the LI Sound with a ridiculous amount of food & booze, STUNNIES in tow & GREAT attitudes taboot. You can tell from the pictures below, this day was one for the books. Getting back on land, I really don't remember much. Two days of beating myself both physically & emotionally will do that to ya. Sunday July 5th. JUST TATTERED. Most of the day spent kickin it poolside with a bazillion + 1 kids running / jumping around. Ugh. We closed things out @ the Crabshell, enjoying some $$ chowder & a few cold Corona's. All in all - this July 4th weekend earned its place amongst the best of em. Well done people!
