Gorgol Bordello - 12.27 Review
We just saw one of the best live shows of 2008 watching Gorgol Bordello perform @ Webster Hall this past Friday night. Their music is as mix of gypsi folk & punk rock - which they delivered full tilt - ultimately creating an energy above & beyond anything we've yet to see from a Webster audience. Their frontman Eugene Hutz is a straight-up superstar. The guy came out swilling from a bottle of red, a big F-U attitude & an energy usually reserved for encores only. The rest of the band is as tight as it gets. All in all - this outfit is the Real Deal Holyfield.
They play again tonight. See you there.

Matisyahu @ Webster
Last night SDSG attended the 3rd show of Matsisyahu's "Festival of Lights" residency at Webster Hall. Truth b told - I've really never seen so many good looking jews rocking out all at once. Matisyahu, (aka Matt Miller) was a former Phish-head who converted to hasidic jewdisim & took his spirituality to a whole new level by forming a band and touring worldwide. His music is a mix of reggae beats, soulful singing and religious infused- hip hop styled rhymes. Last night he ran through a staple of songs, at one point bringing out his mothers 6th grade students to help sing on stage. All in all, I would have to say everyone left with big smiles on their faces & feeling pretty darn good.

Questions for NewYears.com - Best Of
"I'm over 40. Yes, I'm very cool. The crowd at this party - is it 20 year olds, sideways hats and finger formations?? Would La Notte be more appropriate for sophisticated, intelligent, dancing girls who find boxer shorts better inside the pants???? many thanks"
"If it says "open bar "does that mean i drink for free"
"Hi - I received an email that I'm suppsoed to pick up my tickets at "will call"? Does that mean someone will call me?"
"What is the dress code for this event. Jordans, timberlands, baggy jeans, muscle shirts w/ decals - will this work?"
"I'm a model. I plan bringing (3) of my models friends to your NewYears party. Can we buy tickets?"

Rule of the Day
"I have a Jager machine in my bus and one in the dressing room. I also have a new dressing-room rule, which I started over the summer: You must remove one article of clothing- your pants, your top- ore else you are not allowed in my dressing room. So in order to come back and dance and party you gotta take off some clothing. That gets the fucking party started so quick. Everyone’s walking around topless, and shit’s going, music’s bumping, girls are dancing on the table, and you’re like, Okay this is perfect."

Not sure how I feel about this - but if there's ever a year to make it down to good ol' Tennessee Tennessee this is it. The BOSS is also expected to close out the festival Sunday night... Ally - should Trip book the tickets now or tommorrow?

Nothing Gold Can Stay - by Robert Frost
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Slumdog Millionaire - WoW!
My mom put it best last week when she said " Don't walk...RUN to go see this movie!". The story follows a young man from the slums of India who somehow finds himself competing on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire". Curiously the questions he's asked all correlate to his gritty life story & he is able answer them accordingly. I know I stated in a previous post the "Man on Wire" was my favorite film of the year. Not anymore. Slumdog Millionaire stands alone. Great movie!

Ryan Adams Appreciation
God is this guy super talented. I was just reading his daily blog Foggy (thx for the heads up Steam Engine) & I don't think I've ever seen an artist whom effuses so much creativity. I mean the guy is constantly writing, recording, reading crazy books, blogging etc. The man just gets it done & I am thankful, as he is probably my favorite singer / songwriter of this generation. If you haven't picked up or listened to his latest effort " Cardinology" - do so immediately.

Wednesday Lets Get it Done Post
"When was the last time a Cabinet had so many top-flight people regardless of political labels? When was the last time we had a president self-assured enough to entertain -- even welcome -- dissent? When was the last time we had an incoming president with these kinds of problems -- two wars and an economic crisis -- on his plate? The real change here is that ideology for its own sake is out; problem-solving is in."

Tuesday - A Letter to Plax.
Why Plaxico why!? You were the toast of the town after catching the winning pass in last years Superbowl. You just signed a huge contract for 35 million. Your team is the best in the NFL right now & appear to be headed back to the big dance (fingers crossed). You have ALL of this...& you decide to carry a loaded / unregistered pistol into a club two days before a huge interconference game!!??? I just cannot for the life of me understand how you could let your fans, teammates & all the people who believed in you down like that. Now your facing 3 1/2 years in jail at a minimum. Your lucky that you only shot yourdumbass and no one else was hurt. To say the whole thing is a tragedy would be an understatement. What a shame.
